My name is Penny Mulligan and my life is a mess.

After a disastrous marriage that left me with three perfect, rowdy boys and an ex-husband whose middle name might as well be Trouble, I’ve got more than enough testosterone in my life. I’m absolutely not getting involved with anyone.

Besides, at the end of the day when I collapse into bed, I’m too exhausted to think sexy thoughts. Except maybe about the one man who makes my life just a little easier…Mr. Wednesday, a.k.a.
Dillon Henry.

Handsome, charming, thoughtful—the man is fantasy material.

And not just because he brings me my favorite coffee every Wednesday when he meets with my boss.

I’ll be ready to date again…someday…maybe after my boys are in college and I finally have the energy to think about myself. For now, I’m content to stick to my late-night fantasies about a certain coffee-bringing, suit-wearing flirt.

At least, that’s what I tell myself until Dillon Freaking Henry shows up on my doorstep in my hometown, demanding that I let him out of the friend zone.

He’s not intimidated by the fact that I’m a package deal or that my calendar is chaos or that my ex is a monumental pain in the…neck. Nope. Dillon is determined to change my mind.

Part of me almost hopes he can.

Review

USA Today Bestselling Author, Brynne Asher ~ "Stop the presses: Mr. Wednesday has stolen my heart! Dillon Henry can take me out of the friend zone any day. In true Maxwell fashion, this book gripped me from the start and didn't let go. A must read!"

Jeeves Reads Romance ~ "I was woefully unprepared for how FANTASTIC it was going to be. I love a broody, grumpy hero as much as the next girl, but sometimes it's exceedingly refreshing to read about a GOOD guy. A warm, friendly, lovable, and endearing man who discovers that he has a protective streak only once he's found his family. This was a richer, more multi-faceted read than I could've anticipated, and I truly did love the whole thing."

Sam Speed Reads ~ "Recommend for all the romance readers and especially if you love: a fierce & resilient single mom FMC; a strong and protective MMC who falls first and falls hard; found family in a small town; swoon worthy first kisses; hot open door romance; love found after heartbreak"

Jenn the Readaholic ~ "Buckle up and enjoy the ride from lonely mom to woman with everyone on her side. You'll laugh. You may cry. You'll want to yell. But you'll also see glimpses of life as we all know it once in a while, so you'll be eager to see how it all plays out."

BookAddict ~ "I swear, everything Avery Maxwell writes is drenched in heart and kissed by magic. Penny and Dillon's masterful story will live in my soul forever, and you won't want to miss a word of it!"

Booked Up With Emily ~ "This book is so much more than a romance - I actually felt like the romance between Penny and Dillon took a backseat to all of the other issues going on, mainly things to do with Penny's ex-husband and all of the destruction that he leaves in his path. Dillon is top tier and might be my new favorite of Avery's (sorry Dex!!). He does everything in his power to be Penny's rock and when she finally gives in to accept that, it's magical."

Randi Reads ~ "This is such a beautiful, emotional friends to lovers story about finding your place, your family, and your community-a place where you belong and didn't know you were needing. Chance Lake is a small town filled with memorable characters (whose story I can see this author writing about.) I highly recommend this story."

Miss Petite Brunette Book Blog ~ "What a feel good romance about giving love a second chance. Plenty of sweet & silly moments happen between Penny, Dillon and all the other characters. There is also an emotional aspect with all Penny is dealing with. Get cozy and open your heart to love again!"

Besties & Books ~ "What a beautiful story. Who wouldn't want a White Knight in their lives? Such a strong and selfless Momma. And the shoe pile... Be still my heart."

ReadaholicDeb ~ "I loved everything about this messy, chaotic, and sweet romance. This one had it all - troubled pasts, heartbreak, so much simmering chemistry, and the perfect little found family. There are no other words to describe Dillion but perfect. He treated Penny like a queen, embraced all the bumps and hurdles along the way, and never hesitated to be there for her or her kids....oh! and to quote Penny "he's the king of dirty talk". Not only is the story well-written but the mixture between spice, a well-rounded plot, and the building of relationships was well crafted and the pacing of everything just felt right."

Brayzen Bookwyrm ~ "this isn't even a story about two people. It's a story about family and community. Maxwell writes supporting characters who create a sense of intensely interwoven togetherness and interdependence, who lay the foundation and build the platform for the main characters to bond and find their forever"

Bex Book Revieux ~ "the Romantic points are beyond beautiful, the smexy times are EPIC (!!), and overall Ms. Maxwell teaches us again that Family is not always about blood. At the end of the day Family is who you choose, and who chooses you back. One of my favorites this year."

Kelchick Book Lover ~ "Your Last First Kiss is not only a beautiful romance but also a story that deals with substance abuse, children that are in need of love and how two people can freely open their hearts. Ms. Maxwell grabbed my attention right from the first chapter to the last word. I could not get enough of Dillon and Penny."

Tweet Preet Books ~ "I sobbed with emotion while reading parts of it. This is a second chanceish book with two characters who have been through so much but yet belong to each other and a new community. I love how beautifully AM captures the emotions and the struggles of her characters that makes it a wonderful and tear jerking read."

Amanda Loves to Read ~ "Another great book that made me laugh, pulled at my heartstrings and made me fall in love with the characters! If you are looking for a new contemporary romance book to read, I highly recommend this book!"

Talk About Romantic ~ "a beautiful love story between stressed out single mother Penny and Dillion, the man who's determined to prove he can more than handle her chaos, if given the chance. This story was breathtaking in its realness. I was hooked from the beginning and devoured this couples chemistry, connection, love & hope for one another."

Luv Story Addicts ~ "Dillon pushed his way right into our hearts and made us swoon from the very beginning."

Rose Romance Reviews ~ "This book is complicated, messy, and full of conflict and angst and I love it. To me the struggle of the characters really make the HEA worth it. This book is more emotional than spicy, but there are some hot scenes. I found the way Avery Maxwell wove multiple storylines together to create a beautiful story the most intriguing. Dillion was swoon worthy from the beginning with always knowing the right thing to say."

Lowkey Reader ~ "First of all, right from reading the author's note, I knew Dillon and Penny's story is going to be amazing. And yes, I'm the type to read everything from the front cover to the back cover. Onto the story, I absolutely loved the Mulligan family, iykyk. But before you get to the HEA, there are a lot of things they have to work through and not just these two but also Penny's kids. And oh my goodness, I absolutely loved Dillon. The fact that even after what he went through, he still wants to be in their life and give them everything they deserve is absolutely phenomenal. Their story is just wonderful. I still can't get over it."

Curly Bibliophagist ~ "I totally recommend this book. It isn't all sunshine and roses but the journey is worth it for the HEA."

Wagon Wheel Reads ~ "This book had me smiling, laughing, swooning, my heart breaking, and everything in between."

SusieQ Reviews ~ "Maxwell is truly a master at helping love find a way through all the chaos. I look forward to seeing what this author has in store for the next couple residing in Chance Lake."

Peggy Loves Books ~ "If you love: steamy reads, small town romance, friends to lovers, single mom romance and contemporary romance you need to pick this book."

Samantha Reads Alot ~ "Wow. This book gave me ALL the feels and had me hooked from the first chapter!"

Bibliophilic Kitten ~ "Dillon's never-ending patience, understanding, compassion, unconditional love, and dedication won each and every star here. This is a book boyfriend that's husband material."

Julie's Romance Escape ~ "Avery Maxwell hit it out of the park with Your Last First Kiss. The emotion she packed into the story felt real, but not overwhelming. She infused this emotionally deep story with light moments. Her ability to set up a new world and introduce characters that her readers will be begging for was nothing short of author magic."

Avery Maxwell is an American contemporary romance novelist specializing in emotionally driven characters who bring love, chaos, heat, and a side of angst to every story she writes. She grew up in a tiny Vermont town with one flashing light and four stop signs. If you look closely enough, you can often find similarities between her small hometown and the stories she creates.

When Avery isn’t on mom-duty or busy writing, you can find her at a concert or snuggling on the couch with a glass of wine and her very own Prince Charming.

Take a Chance on Love
Single parent, He falls first, Strong Heroine, Found Family, yes, all these buzz words are absolutely accurate. AND they fail to represent the depth to be found in this first step into Avery Maxwell’s new world. Maxwell’s eleventh book brings us new places and faces. Fans of the Westbrooks Broken Hearts and Family Ties series will find all the things they’ve come to love about the worlds Maxwell weaves, but in this story, a true standalone, she invites new readers to jump in with both feet with no mid-series FOMO. What does the new world of Chance Lake and Dillon and Penny’s story offer? Swoony heroes who are all in for their queens, strong female leads so real you’ll invite them for coffee, adorable kids and quirky found family you’ll want to make your own, and a story that will squeeze your heart in all the best ways. You know all the things Avery Maxwell does so well. YLFK is the real world on the page, all the messy, glorious, steamy, tragic, beautiful truth of it, and a happily ever after too. I recommend this wholeheartedly. While handled with a deft hand, tragic realities of divorce, alcoholism, and starting over are sub-themes, and sensitive readers should consider the author’s note before diving in.

When the highlighted quotes and passages in a book span every chapter, and you have trouble choosing exactly which ones to print for your reading journal because you want to include them all but you don’t have that much space on the spread, you know you’ve found a forever book. Your Last First Kiss by Avery Maxwell is one of those books.

Your Last First Kiss (YLFK) brings beautiful emotional depth with fantastic elements of humor, blending them together to paint the perfect picture of how life is far from picture perfect. It's real and honest. And yes, it's deep and has levels of emotional intensity some may be uncomfortable with. But a good story—no, a great story—should make us uncomfortable with things. And make us think and feel all the emotions. Because when it comes down to it, those emotions are all important to really reach a reader’s soul. And YLFK reached my freaking soul!

Maxwell infuses Penny and Dillon’s story with wonderful moments of light and levity. Beyond the connection and pull Penny and Dillon feel for each other—and, whew! Is there ever some intense connection there—humor and laugh-out-loud encounters between characters that mirror banter between close siblings abound throughout. And every encounter, every conversation, awakens the realization and recognition in the characters of how life should and can be, even between and among found family, which is sometimes tighter and more connected than blood relatives.

Both Dillon and Penny have their own mess and chaos to manage, whether it’s the physical and mental scars of a marriage to a monster or being brought up by them. I’ve never experienced what these characters did, and I still felt their pain, their passion, their conflict, and their triumphs. Watching Dillon fall first and struggle to be accepted as Penny deals with the turmoil she’s immersed in daily, and having it play out so vividly in my mind, is a shining example of how fiction can be so real. Their words sink deep into a reader's heart, soul, consciousness, until that reader feels like a true participant in their lives.

But this isn’t even a story about two people. It’s a story about family and community. Maxwell writes supporting characters who create a sense of intensely interwoven togetherness and interdependence, who lay the foundation and build the platform for the main characters to bond and find their forever. The good (Miller), the bad (Eddy), and even the ugly truth of life's consequences for bad actions and behavior are essential and have a solid place throughout the plot.

All of this to say, readers are not just getting a pretty picture with some angst leading to an eventual HEA. They are going to be immersed in multiple and ever-evolving emotions. Confronted with lessons in coming to terms with things in and out of your control. Enlightened by characters intent on finding and building a family. Challenged by things that aren't always pretty or perfect but, with the right people at your side, can be pretty imperfectly perfect. And ultimately understanding the heartache in heartbreak, and find that the journey back can be difficult and painful, but so worth it.

Your Last First Kiss is a standalone read in Maxwell’s literary world. There will be some familiar names and faces, but they will only encourage a new reader to go back to her backlist while not taking anything away from YLFK. Oh, and Miller. Yeah, Miller. Miller is mine. Just kidding. But, not really. ;-)

It's pretty low angst, which I for one prefer.
It was a good mix of tears and goofy smiles. A perfect lazy sunday read.

After I read Without A Hitch, that was it for me. I immediately read my way through the back catalog of this gifted storyteller and fell in love with all things Westbrook. And while we don’t get a lot of the Westbrook brothers in this spin-off, we certainly see their influence and their true heart.

Dillon Henry has worked for Ashton Westbrook's security company, Envision, for several years, but unbeknownst to Dillon, it's time for a major change in his life. The small New England town of Chance Lake needs Dillon's particular skill set, and it turns out Dillon needs Chance Lake just as much. And if it regularly puts him in the same place as his Wednesday Girl, all the better.

Penny Mulligan enjoys her visits with Dillon when he comes to meet with her boss each Wednesday. She dreams of more, but her reality is a mess. She's barely keeping her head above water working a job in the city, parenting her three boys, and dealing with her horrible ex-husband. And his too-young girlfriend. And their two neglected daughters. When Dillon shows up in Chance Lake, all that changes.

No, the mess doesn’t magically disappear. In fact, it gets worse. So much worse. But Dillon is determined to earn trust and show he’s there for the long haul. He'll share Penny's burden, be there for her boys, and support her in every endeavor. And through his friendship with Penny's brother-in-law, Miller, and wisdom from an old soul named Remy, Dillon may just find his place in the world where he can really make a difference in his community.

This one ruined me in the sweetest and best of ways and then gave my heart wings. I love the themes of finding yourself, a sense of community, found family, and choosing to frame your own future. And the best of all, learning to trust and rely on someone else.

I swear, everything Avery Maxwell writes is drenched in heart and kissed by magic. Her stories are charming and captivating, her characters are authentic, endearing, and eternally relatable, and my heart is soaring and satisfied when I finish one of her books. Penny and Dillon's masterful story will live in my soul forever, and you won’t want to miss a word of it!

I should just say “Five Stars”and leave it at that. There is no way for me, or anyone else, to write a review worthy enough for this excellent book by Avery Maxwell.
Avery took a very difficult subject and wove it into a story of friendship, love, patience, heartbreak, and family. This book is wholeheartedly recommended to anyone who has met the challenges of alcoholism and addiction and still has high hopes and faith of making through to the other side. My wife and I still face these challenges with a member of our direct family. We KNOW the road Penny travels in this book and we have been as patient as Dillon. We are stronger for it but would never wish this on anyone.
How do you tackle subjects like alcoholism, addiction, child neglect, and manslaughter and still produce one of the most beautiful and sensitive of books? You start by changing your name to Avery Maxwell.

Overall this book is so incredibly heartwarming and sweet. The tenderness of Dillion is something so kind and genuine. I felt like the book drug on a little bit. Like the first half of the book and the story line that unfolded after that always were two different books (or at least like that should have been. I loved the family dynamic of this book and the characters were all so warm. There were a couple plot points that felt a little forced and out of left field, which was a take away for me. But overall a sweet book if you’re wanting something heart warming

5.0 out of 5 stars Dillon + Penny are chaotic perfection!
Reviewed in Australia on May 9, 2023
This book is a love letter to chaos & imperfection. To those of us who have tried to be perfect no matter the circumstances. I was able to relate to the feelings in this story in so many ways even though I don’t live Penny’s particular chaos.

Penny is a single mother trying to balance every part of her life to ensure her children are happy, healthy and cared for.

Dillon Henry is top tier book boyfriend materiel if a cinnamon roll hero with his own issues but knows what he wants and is single minded in his pursuit is your thing. From the very beginning he demonstrated his heart of gold.

The hero & heroine have an existing friendly relationship when the story begins and right from the start the longing is evident. The mutual pining between these two is off the charts. I really enjoyed how they had to work to come together. When they finally do you can’t help but root for them to just be happy.

Avery Maxwell is a master of found family and this was especially emotional as Dillon tries to find his place with Penny and her kids.

I am so so so exited to get back to the town of Chance Lakes and see what other adventures the author will take us on.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really freaking hate this book

For the love of all that's writing, I've been crying my eyes out every 3 sentences.

This is the first book I've read from Avery, and am a sucker for single parents books since I'm a single parent's child, hell I'm Kai the female version.
Every single hope and dream I've had a child, Avery wrote into Dillon.

So I really freaking hate this book because it made me relive all my demons in the best of ways.

I really hope you make Chance Lake a series because I'm dying to see the development of all the characters I've met in this book so far.

So now to read the rest of Avery's books.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 Stars) Dillon + Penny

This authors is new to me. I noticed the blurb of the story in a newsletter for another author and it attracted my interest straight away. Constructively the first parts of the book and the way it was written did confuse me (like things were missing??) with how it was written but towards the middle and the end the story started to read really nicely and I enjoyed it.
